Pre-development testing took place on a site adjacent to the convent of St Louis, which occupies the site of Essex Castle, built between 1628 and 1633 by Robert Devereux, third earl of Essex. The site of the monastery of Magheross (SMR 34:35) lies to the south of the proposed development. An existing house, situated at the foot of a steeply sloping hill, was to be rebuilt and extended. A garage belonging to the old house had been dug into the side of the hill, and much of the extension was to be situated on top of this.
Three trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a ditching bucket. Two trenches revealed modern disturbance relating to the original insertion of the garage building that had occupied part of the site. The third trench contained a dry clay/loam topsoil. All overlay a gravelly, yellow subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
