Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out at the site of a proposed sand and gravel quarry on various dates in May and June. The features uncovered comprised four fire spots (c. 2m x 1.8m), two field drains (c. 0.6m wide, c. 0.16m deep) and two shallow deposits (c. 0.07m thick). It was not possible to establish a date for any of these features as no associated finds were recovered. The field drains are obviously associated with agricultural practice, and the loose composition of the shallow deposits suggests that these may have resulted from root activity. The fire spots were defined by areas of burnt, orange, silty clay subsoil and had an average thickness of 0.1m. There was nothing to indicate that these features were of any archaeological significance.
