Monitoring was carried out during the topsoil-stripping and resurfacing work of the canal towpath at Roughgrange, Co. Meath. The monitoring revealed that the sod and topsoil extended to an average depth of 0.18m and directly overlay the natural, grey gravel and stone. No archaeological features were exposed and all the finds were late 20th-century in date. Similarly, a number of modern metal finds were uncovered during a metal-detection survey of the topsoil carried out as part of the overall monitoring. All the finds uncovered were modern in date.
Work has yet to be started on the associated carpark at the end of the towpath at Roughgrange/ Rossnaree. This will also be conducted under archaeological supervision.
