Monitoring of construction works commenced at Killaskillen on 31 May 2000. Archaeological features were revealed during topsoil-stripping within the first three days of the commencement of construction works. As a result, archaeological excavation followed. Excavation revealed various features including hearths, ditches, pits, furrows, trenches and field drains. While the majority of the field drains and some of the ditches seemed to be modern on excavation, at least one ditch is likely to be of prehistoric date. Radiocarbon dates for the hearths uncovered should provide a clearer indication of dating for this site.
Following completion of excavation, monitoring of construction works continued. Five small areas of charcoal were uncovered at various locations during topsoil-stripping, cut into the natural boulder clay. Apart from these, construction works have not revealed any further deposits, features or finds of archaeological potential.
Archaeological monitoring is still in progress at Killaskillen.
