An archaeological assessment was carried out in advance of the construction of a proposed residential development at Faughart Lower, Dundalk, Co. Louth, from 28 to 29 September 2000. It is proposed to construct seven dwelling-houses with associated services and an access roadway on the site.
Twenty-two trenches were excavated by machine in the area to be disturbed by the development. The excavation failed to reveal any evidence of archaeological stratigraphy or finds of archaeological significance.
However, it must be noted that a megalithic structure exists in the southern section of the site within the area of the proposed development. The megalithic structure lies within an existing field boundary and is located in the centre of Site No. 3 of the proposed development. The proposed house is located only 20m north of this tomb. The proposed access roadway is located only a short distance to the west. This proposed house and associated services, including a section of the access driveway, will have a negative visual impact on the monument and its setting. In view of this, it is recommended that the proposed development plans be revised to accommodate a buffer zone around the monument wherein no development may take place. The plans for the proposed development should be revised in consultation with DĂșchas The Heritage Service.
