An archaeological assessment of a proposed residential development site was carried out on 17 April 2000 at Battsland, Dunleer, Co. Louth. The site of the proposed development is located to the south of the ‘Mountain View’ housing estate, close to the Dublin–Belfast railway line, and lies a short distance to the east of an Early Christian monastic site.

Eight test-trenches excavated by machine in the area of the proposed development revealed that the sod and topsoil directly overlay the natural, orange boulder clay at a depth of 0.35m. A layer of modern, coarse, brown clay was exposed in Trench 1 to the north of the site to a depth of 0.25m, which overlay the natural, orange boulder clay. This layer contained numerous fragments of broken glass, china and black-glazed earthenware and clearly represented a deposit of post-medieval building debris that had been dumped in the corner of the site. No archaeological features were revealed in any of the trenches, and no finds of archaeological interest were recovered. No further archaeological excavation is therefore necessary at the site.
