Pre-development test-trenching took place in advance of the development of an extension to existing buildings at the junction of West and Duke streets, Drogheda. The medieval street-plan of Drogheda is largely intact (Bradley et al. 1986, 75), with West and Duke streets forming part of this matrix, of checkerboard plan. West Street is one of four streets that run parallel to the river, while Duke Street is one of a series of smaller cross-streets (Bradley 1997, 16). West Street was referred to as the ‘street to the west gate’ in 1247 and in 1256 (Brooks 1953), while it was called ‘great west street’ in 1323 (Mills and McEnery 1916).

No further work took place, as the developer decided not to proceed with development at this time.
