On 20 January 2000 an assessment was carried out at No. 1 Bolton Street/Square, Drogheda, Co. Louth, where it is proposed to construct a two-storey dwelling unit/extension to an existing house.
One test-trench was excavated by machine along the western wall of the proposed development. The excavation did not reveal any evidence for archaeological stratigraphy but showed that the ground had been built up in the recent past. The loose, brown topsoil lay directly above a brown, stony loam, which was probably a layer of modern demolition rubble that was spread over the site to raise or to even the ground level. This lay above the natural boulder clay, which was exposed at an average depth of 1.1m.
No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered, and no further work is required for the proposed development.
