An assessment was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to the rear of No. 52 Market Street, Ardee, Co. Louth, on 21 November 2000. Three trenches were excavated. Trenches 1 and 2 were excavated directly behind the house, and Trench 3 was excavated in the garden in the area of the proposed sewer connection and soak-pit.

Deposits of 18th–20th-century date were exposed in Trenches 1 and 2. The stratigraphy exposed in Trench 3 represents 19th–20th-century deposits; a brick and stone wall at the eastern end of the trench was part of a garden shed or outbuilding. No archaeological features or deposits associated with Hatch’s Castle were evident in any of the excavated trenches, and all finds came from 18th-century contexts or later.

Consequently, the proposed extension will not have an archaeological impact, and no further work is required.
