A test excavation took place on the site of a proposed housing development close to the Deel River at the southern end of the town of Rathkeale. Three large strip-trenches were dug by mechanical excavator in February 2000. The excavation revealed that the subsurface stratigraphy was composed mainly of naturally deposited, fine, silty clay material, which had accumulated as a result of flooding of the nearby river. No evidence for activity of an archaeological nature was revealed in any of the cuttings.
