An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a development site at Patrickswell (Ballyanrahan townland) on 28 March 2000. The work was undertaken in compliance with a condition included in grants of planning in relation to the construction of a service station and ancillary buildings on the site.
At the south-eastern corner of the development area is a holy well dedicated to St Patrick, from which the village takes its name. The well opening is capped by a large flagstone, which, in former times, served as the base to a water pump. This pump has since been removed. The well is surrounded by stone walls capped with cope stones, and a modern iron fence and gate serve as an entrance feature to the south. On the internal face of the northern wall is a plaque with a sculpture of a bishop holding a book and crozier, dedicated to St Patrick.
Six trenches were excavated by machine to the west and north of the boundaries to the well. No features, structures, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered. Consequently, it was suggested that no further archaeological involvement was required in respect of the proposed development.
