Test excavations were undertaken at this site prior to a grant of planning permission. Testing was requested because of the location of the proposed development site within the zone of archaeological potential as identified for the town of Newcastlewest. The proposed development site comprised two adjoining linear tenements. A trench was opened in each tenement. The size of the trenches was dictated by the presence of existing structures on both sites.
Trench 1, located on the northern property, measured 2.5m by 1.5m. It had an average depth of 1.2m. The stratigraphy consisted of a 0.1m layer of concrete, overlying a 0.1m deposit of sandy clay containing modern brick and glass. The basal layer consisted of a yellow/blue, sandy clay subsoil. All layers were archaeologically sterile.
Trench 2, located in the southern property, measured 3.5m by 2.5m. It had an average depth of 1.1m. The stratigraphy consisted of a 0.05m layer of concrete overlying a yellow/blue, sandy clay subsoil. All layers were archaeologically sterile.
No artefacts or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified during monitoring.
