Test-trenching was carried out for a proposed development at Main Street, Adare, Co. Limerick. The site is in the west of the town, on the southern side of Main Street west of the municipal park, within the medieval town of Adare. The proposed development is a two-storey retail development with a single-storey extension to the rear. The area of the extension is 11m long from the rear of the building and 7.89m wide.
Two test-trenches were opened by mechanical excavator in the rear garden area of the development site. Trench 1, 9m by 0.9m, was oriented north-north-west/south-south-east. Trench 2, 3m by 0.9m, was at right angles to Trench 1. No archaeological soils were encountered in either trench. A disused septic tank was revealed in the north of Trench 1.
No further archaeological excavation of this site was recommended.
