The proposed development site is located in the very northern end of Hightown, part of the medieval city of Kilkenny, just inside the line of the town wall. The wall is not visible at ground level on the site but is shown by the Urban Survey to have run along the river’s edge at the western end of the site, c. 8m west of the proposed development. No disturbance is to take place within 8m of the town wall, and consequently no investigation took place in this area.
One test-trench was opened on the site on 20 April 2000 in advance of development, to fulfil planning conditions The test-trench was 1.5m wide and ran the length of the proposed development. It was opened by mechanical digger to a depth of 0.6m. No archaeological features or levels were noted in the trench.
