The excavation was undertaken after archaeological features were located during trial-trenching in January 1999. Excavation was subsequently carried out from 4 to 14 May 1999, after transferral of the licence originally issued to Judith Carroll.
The new excavation area was designated Area 6 and adjoins Areas 2 and 5, which lie to the west and north respectively. Areas 1 to 5 were excavated by Judith Carroll from 29 April to 4 November 1998 (Excavations 1998, 121–3). As with previous excavations in the immediate surrounding areas, the site was characterised by clusters of intercutting pit features, and it also contained the remains of part of a post-medieval building and a modern vehicle inspection pit.
Editor’s note: The summary of this excavation, which was carried out during 1999, arrived too late for publication in the bulletin of that year.
