An archaeological excavation was required to accommodate the construction of Manhole 76 of the Kilkenny Main Drainage Scheme, Stage 4. The construction of this manhole would allow micro-tunnelling between Parliament Street and Old Abbey Street to take place. The location of the manhole was within the zone of archaeological potential as identified for Kilkenny and was close to St Francis’s Abbey. At the site of 33 Parliament Street it is known that two Georgian houses were upstanding until 1932.
The manhole shaft had a diameter of 4.1m and a depth of 5.73m. Seven stratigraphic layers were identified, all of which were archaeologically sterile. A stone flag floor, associated with the original Georgian houses, was identified at a depth of 2m below the current ground surface. Alternating layers of sand, gravel and clay were identified for a depth of 3.73m beneath the stone floor.
