Pre-construction archaeological testing was undertaken at No. 13 Lower New Street, Kilkenny. New Street is located at the western perimeter of the zone of archaeological potential for Kilkenny City. Planning permission had been obtained to demolish the existing building on the site and construct five apartments. One of the planning conditions required that archaeological test-trenches should be opened on the site.
Five test-trenches were opened with the aid of a machine. No archaeological remains were found at this site. There was a deep deposit of topsoil in three of the opened trenches. The topsoil directly overlay the subsoil horizon. In the trench sited along the front line of the site, the natural deposits were immediately beneath ground level. In the fourth trench opened, there was a cut into the natural deposits. The cut was filled with stone, rubble, red brick and broken slate.
Nothing of archaeological significance was found at this site.
