Four test-trenches were mechanically opened on the site in January 2000 in advance of development to fulfil planning conditions. Trenches 1 and 2 ran along the inside of two mortared walls, which were the east and west walls of the basements to houses that previously stood on the site. Below the level of the basements was natural clay.
No evidence for archaeological levels was found in Trenches 3 and 4.
