Monitoring of topsoil-stripping and associated plant excavations was carried out at the Arcon Mines, Galmoy, Co. Kilkenny. The topsoil-stripping formed part of the works associated with the construction of a new tailings pond at the mine. During the construction of the first tailings pond in 1996, a number of fulachta fiadh/burnt mounds were recorded, as well as a corn-drying kiln with associated industrial activity. No archaeological features were identified during the monitoring in 1999 (Excavations 1999, 140), but three fulacht fiadh sites were identified in January 2000, which required excavation. These sites were excavated under licence numbers 00E0048, 00E0049, and 00E0079, and each has been individually summarised (see Excavations 2000, Nos 521, 522 and 523).
