A test excavation was conducted on this site on 18 December 2000 in advance of planning permission. It is intended to construct an extension to an existing building. The purpose of the excavation was to ascertain the nature and extent of any historical or archaeological features or materials. The development will be next to an area that has seen previous construction and landfill work.
Two test-trenches were excavated. The first was 13m long and ran parallel to and 2m from an existing grain store. The second trench extended from Trench 1 to the edge of the proposed area of development. The intended development will not exceed a depth of 1m. Both trenches were dug to a depth of 1.2–1.4m to ensure that all potential archaeological material and features would be encountered. The stratigraphy encountered consisted entirely of hardcore landfill with inclusions of modern metal debris. No material or features of an archaeological nature were encountered during the excavation.
