Archaeological monitoring of a sewerage connection scheme at Walshestown, Athgarvan, Co. Kildare, took place between April and June 2000. Monitoring of the excavation of the rising water-main pipe-trench did not reveal any deposits, features or finds. The trench was excavated along a road, which consisted of a tarmac surface above a hardcore layer extending to a depth of 1.2m. Below this the natural glacial sands and gravel were exposed. A laneway on the eastern side of the River Liffey was also excavated, and here the boulder clay was exposed at a depth of 0.3m below the surface, for a distance of almost 65m. Similar results were evident at the treatment works site where the pump sump was excavated. No archaeological features were exposed over the entire scheme.

The monitoring of the excavation of the rising water-main pipe-trench did not reveal any deposits, features or finds of archaeological potential. The road was excavated down to the natural sands and gravels and would have removed any deposits that may have existed here. There was little variation along the laneway on the eastern side of the River Liffey, and boulder clay was exposed at an average depth of 0.3m below the surface. Similar results were evident at the treatment works site where the pump sump was excavated. The natural boulder clay was directly beneath the sod, and a 4m section of disturbed ground was caused by groundworks of relatively recent date. As no archaeological features were exposed over the entire scheme, no further work is required.
