In the original EIS for Carton Demesne, an 18th-century estate, AP Site No. 12 was identified as a ‘Group of at least four small ring-ditches. Three are c. 15m in diameter, one is 20m in diameter.’ No traces of these sites remained above ground. These possible sites are located in the southern area of the demesne lands. This area is to be developed as an eighteen-hole golf-course, the Colin Montgomerie Golf-Course, and is the second of several phases of development for Carton Demesne. An assessment was carried out in advance of development.
Nine test-trench locations were laid out to traverse the areas of the possible ring-ditches. Several stony patches were visible in the trenches; these patches corresponded to the raised areas in the undulating landscape and appear to be natural features.
No archaeological finds or features were recovered in this area.
