In the original EIS for Carton Demesne, an 18th-century estate, AP Site No. 11 was identified as a ‘Possible Enclosure’. No traces of this site remained above ground. The possible site was located in the southern area of the demesne lands. This area is to be developed as an eighteen-hole golf-course, the Colin Montgomerie Golf-Course, and is the second of several phases of development for Carton Demesne.
An assessment was carried out in advance of development. Five test-trenches were excavated, but no evidence of an enclosure was revealed. A small burnt spread was identified, possibly the remains of a fulacht fiadh. If development is to disturb this area, archaeological excavation of the burnt spread will be necessary.
No finds were recovered during testing.
