Monitoring was required within the Carton estate because of the large-scale construction works that would alter the demesne’s use from pasture and tillage farmland to an eighteen-hole golf-course. This golf-course (to be named the Colin Montgomerie Golf-Course) is located mainly in the area of the estate that is south of the Rye Water. The construction of this course is the second of several phases of development proposed for the Carton estate. The Montgomerie Golf-Course is to be constructed in two phases; Holes 8–15 are in the first phase.
Because of the nature of the construction works it was decided to place strips across Holes 8–10, 11–15 and 16 in advance of construction. All of these strips were monitored for archaeological remains. A possible cremation was identified on the area of Hole 15; no other archaeological finds or features were recovered.
