A single trench was opened alongside the enclosing wall around the manorial church of Kilkea Castle. Excavations had previously been undertaken around the castle, north-east of the church, by Mary McMahon (Excavations 1993, 47; Excavations 1995, 46, 93E0061; Excavations 1997, 93, 97E0443). The trench was opened to ensure that no archaeological deposits or features would be damaged during the insertion of a pressure monitor for a Bord Gáis pipeline. The trench measured 4m by 1m. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in the trench prior to construction. Monitoring of the remainder of the pipeline was carried out by Redmond Tobin (see Excavations 2000, No. 490).
