As part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Curragh Camp, new storage facilities are being built on two sites within the Camp. The Group 1 and 2 Stores are being built between Plunkett and Connolly Barracks on the crest of the ridge at the western end of the Camp; the Group 3 and 4 Stores are being built on a site to the rear of the Camp supermarket in the valley on the southern side of the ridge. These sites are within an archaeological complex. The former site was most recently used as a surface carpark; the latter was a flat grassy area. Dúchas The Heritage Service recommended that ground reduction works on both sites be monitored by a licensed archaeologist.
Monitoring took place during October and November 2000. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted on the sites; the only significant find was a clay pipe stamped ‘Curragh Camp’. The developments have proceeded.
