A number of barrows are known to have existed on the summit of the ridge that is now largely occupied by the Curragh Camp; this area is classified as an archaeological complex in the Record of Monuments and Places.
The Department of Defence is currently making a major investment in improving facilities in the Curragh Camp. An archaeological assessment was commissioned in order to address the archaeological implications of the proposed construction of an ordnance and transport school and new canteen facilities on adjacent sites in Clarke and Ceannt Barracks. The site is currently occupied by parade grounds, a marshalling yard, a helicopter pad, a green area and a canteen. The site is on the crest of the ridge, c. 400m west of the nearest known archaeological monument (SMR 23:53).
The assessment was carried out on the basis of documentary research and the excavation of four test-trenches. The test-trenches were positioned with reference to the likely impact of the proposed development. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
