An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a proposed development site at Moate Commons, Clane, Co. Kildare, on 17 July 2000. The work was undertaken in compliance with a condition included by An Bord Pleanála in an appealed grant of planning. In addition, such an evaluation/ assessment had been recommended by Dúchas The Heritage Service.
The site lies to the south-west of the village of Clane, to the west of a motte and holy well site and within the area of archaeological potential defined by the Urban Archaeology Survey for County Kildare.
Seven trial-trenches were mechanically excavated. No features, structures, deposits or finds of archaeological potential were revealed. Given the results of testing, it was not considered likely that any material of archaeological interest or potential existed within the present site boundaries. Accordingly, it was suggested that no further archaeological involvement was required at the site.
