The first phase of monitoring of topsoil-stripping associated with a residential development site located at Skenagun, Castledermot, Co. Kildare, was carried out from 27 September to 2 October 2000 in compliance with conditions included in the grant of planning in relation to the development. The site is located on the northern side of the town and on the western side of Main Street/Dublin Road. Immediately adjacent to the eastern boundary of the site is a stone tower, the only extant remains of the Fratres Cruciferi hospital of St John the Baptist, which may date to the 13th century. Subsurface features possibly associated with this site were uncovered by Anne Connolly during limited testing of the site in 1996 (Excavations 1996, 50). Consequently, the area incorporating such features has been set aside as a ‘green area’ of the present development.
No features, structures or deposits of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the monitoring, although 28 pottery sherds of medieval/post-medieval date were recovered. Further monitoring is expected to commence in spring 2001.
