Monitoring of the refurbishment of footpaths and installations of ducting and junction boxes for telephone communications was intermittently carried out in Leinster Street, Athy, from 8 May to 5 July 2000. The footpaths on both sides of Leinster Street were refurbished; initially the work consisted of the removal of existing paving slabs, concrete and underlying brown, sandy soil. The footpaths were on average 1.9m wide and were excavated to a depth of 0.15–0.2m. Obsolete lead water pipes and other elements of former services were removed. This allowed the excavation of a trench, 0.5–0.9m wide and 0.9m deep, to accommodate pipe ducts along the length of each footpath in Leinster Street. Junction boxes, varying in size from 0.95m to 1.4m long, 0.7m wide and 0.22m to 0.2m deep, were also installed. No material or features of archaeological interest came to light.
