The site at Shrone Beg entails the development of 14ha for sand and gravel extraction, in addition to the construction of associated roads, services, settling lagoons and office buildings. Because of the scale of the site, the development work will be undertaken in a number of phases, and it is expected to take between ten to fifteen years to complete. Approximately three-quarters of the first phase of development work has now been completed.
The stratigraphy of the site consisted of a peat-bog deposit 0.1–1.5m deep overlying a layer of oxidised yellow-orange, sandy clay subsoil. No artefacts or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified during the course of archaeological monitoring undertaken to date.
