Monitoring of topsoil clearance associated with the construction of a single dwelling-house was undertaken. The proposed house site was located near an enclosure identified through aerial photographs. Test excavations to identify the nature and extent of the enclosure were undertaken by John Tierney in 1998 (Excavations 1998, 95). The proposed location of the house was subsequently altered in order to avoid affecting archaeological remains.
A rectangular platform to accommodate the excavation of foundation trenches was cleared of topsoil. The platform measured 21m east–west by 10m. The area of the driveway was also cleared of topsoil; this measured 6m east–west by 40m. The topsoil had an average depth of 0.2m; it overlay a yellow-orange, sandy clay subsoil. No artefacts or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified during the monitoring.
