Non-licensed monitoring of development works at Kilmurry, Kenmare, identified two archaeological pit features. The first was oval in plan, measuring 1.8m by 1.35m x 0.16m; it was situated in the vicinity of House No. 16. It contained two basic fills, the uppermost of which was a dark brown/black, silty clay composed of 10% burnt limestone and 4% fire-shattered sandstones. The upper fill is very similar in composition to material retrieved from burnt mounds. Five stake-holes were vertically inserted into the base of the feature. The function of the feature is unknown, but, based on the excavation results of similar features in Tralee, it is probable that it belongs to the Bronze Age.
The second pit feature identified was situated near House No. 2. It was oval in plan with a linear westward extension. The pit contained evidence of in situ burning and recutting, indicating that it was used and cleaned at least twice. There were no inclusions to indicate a time-frame or function for this feature.
