Monitoring took place of a sand-and-gravel pit covering a site of c. 100 acres in the townland of Ballahacommane, Killarney, Co. Kerry, which lies in an area of archaeological potential. The site is c. 7km south-east of Killarney town and 650m south of the N72 (Killarney–Mallow) road. The existing sand-and-gravel pit in the townland of Clash is c. 1.5km to the west. Investigations during Phases 1 and 2 of the development did not reveal any archaeological remains, but, given the scale of the development, future phases may reveal archaeological material.
Phase 1 consisted of the topsoil clearance of 7 acres of the site in Area 1 and the construction of a 750m access road, a boundary bank and a number of haul roads. Monitoring was carried out from 2 February to 10 April. Initial inspection of the site had revealed no visible archaeological features. No subsoil-cut features were uncovered during the monitoring of the topsoil clearance in this phase of the development.
Phase 2 consisted of the topsoil clearance of c. 3 acres of the site in Area 1 and the digging of 42 test-holes across the entire c. 100-acre site, to determine the extent and quality of the aggregates on the site. Monitoring of Phase 2 was carried out from 21 August to 26 September. No archaeological finds or features were discovered during the digging of the trial-holes.
No archaeological material was discovered, disturbed or destroyed during topsoil clearance and ground reduction in Phase 2 of the development.
