The proposed development consisted of the demolition of an existing building and the construction of townhouses. It was recommended by Dúchas The Heritage Service that pre-development testing be carried out at the site, which is located on Vicar Street, with views of St Mary’s Cathedral at the rear.
Four trenches were mechanically excavated, three at the rear of the existing buildings and one at the street end. The layers present in the trenches at the rear of the site consisted of garden soil over the natural sand. The trench between the two buildings contained a rubble layer overlying the natural. Nothing of archaeological significance was evident in the course of the trial-trenching.
