Test-trenching, excavation and monitoring took place related to the proposed development of two houses located within the zone of archaeological potential of a large archaeological complex, including a number of cashels and field systems.
Eight trenches were excavated by machine to the level of undisturbed natural. No archaeological remains were uncovered in the test-trenches.
Two other trenches were excavated by hand where the driveways for each house cross a visible field boundary. A 1m x 6m trench was excavated manually in each location. The stones of the field boundary were exposed, recorded and subsequently excavated. The field boundary was c. 0.5m high and 1.5–2m wide. It consisted mainly of larger stones at the base, covered by medium-sized stones, forming a low linear mound. There was no evidence of a foundation trench or proper facing. No other archaeological remains were found in association with the field boundary.
After the excavation was complete, 4m-wide sections of the boundary were removed by machine under supervision to accommodate each of the proposed drives. No further archaeological remains were revealed.
