This work, carried out on 12 December 2000, involved the test excavation of a site before its development, at Killeenhugh townland, Co. Galway, and was undertaken in response to a condition of planning, as the proposed development was situated north-east of and within the constraint of a ringfort and souterrain. The development consisted of the construction of a dwelling-house with associated septic tank and percolation area.

Three trial-trenches were excavated by machine. Trench A was 30.3m long (north-east/south-west), 1.25–1.4m wide and 0.3–0.55m deep. Trench B exited the north-east end of Trench A and was 15.1m long (north-west/south-east), 1.2–1.4m wide and 0.3–0.5m deep. Trench C was 15.5m long (north-west/south-east), 1.2–1.4m wide and 0.3–0.5m deep.

The stratigraphy was the same in all three trenches, topsoil on the surface (0.2–0.3m thick), above boulder clay. No artefacts were in evidence.

The testing revealed natural, undisturbed stratigraphy in all three trenches, i.e. nothing of archaeological significance.
