The proposed development involved an extension to Taylor’s Bar, Pump Lane, Galway. As the site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Galway, it was recommended by Dúchas The Heritage Service that pre-development testing be carried out. This involved the mechanical excavation of two test-trenches at the rear of the existing building.
The stratigraphy consisted of two phases of demolition rubble and a layer of cobbles. The cobbles appeared to be contemporary with the outbuildings along the rear wall of Taylor’s Bar, which dates to the 20th century. Underlying the cobbles was a black, silty clay layer with inclusions of oyster shells, measuring 0.6m in depth. This layer overlay the natural marl and bedrock. No features or artefacts were evident in the course of the monitoring.
