Monitoring of ground disturbance took place at the site of a proposed development at the Fairgreen, Galway. This involves the extensive redevelopment of the site, with the construction of a commercial, residential, retail and carparking development carried out over five separate levels (two basement levels and three storeys above ground). Pre-development testing was carried out here by Anne Connolly (Excavations 1999, 99, 99E0745). This report, while finding nothing of archaeological significance, recommended that all site works should be monitored.
Monitoring revealed no artefacts or features of archaeological significance. The southern end of the site was occupied by the foundations of an abattoir, which had been demolished prior to development. Large concrete piles that had been utilised in the foundations were uncovered, extending for a depth of 4–5m. Elsewhere on site the stratigraphy consisted of a concrete or stone surface overlying an organic, brown, silty clay with occasional shells. This layer extended for a maximum depth of 1m and overlay a sterile, red clay, which overlay boulder clay.
