Monitoring was carried out on the site of a proposed housing development near Kinvara, Co. Galway. The proposed development entails the construction of a single-storey, detached, dormer dwelling-house, a driveway and percolation area in the townland of Cartron, approximately 1.5km north-east of Kinvara. This involved the excavation of a 3.5m-wide and 0.3–0.5m-deep strip in order to facilitate the driveway and further excavations for the house foundation and percolation area. The proposed dwelling measures c. 36m north–south x 30m. The proposed development is located close to the site of a ringfort.
The site is located at the top of an elevated south-facing hillside to the north-west of Doansheedy Fort. The site is bounded on all sides by a low wall, and by a roadway to the south. The proposed site is located on a gently rising, south-facing hillside that affords good views south-west to gently undulating farmlands.
Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out on 10 and 13 October 2000, using a toothless trenching bucket. Decaying/shattered limestone bedrock was sealed by a series of natural, compact, grey/white, sandy silts and loose, reddish-brown, sandy clays, which in turn underlay topsoil and sod. Nothing of archaeological significance was observed.
