The proposed development is located to the east of Craughwell town. According to the SMR, the area of the proposed development contained a hut circle, a possible ringfort, a souterrain and a field system. However, over the last fifty years the field had been greatly disturbed. In 1999 the owner cleared part of the site to facilitate the construction of a dwelling-house and new entranceway. It was recommended by DĂșchas The Heritage Service that an archaeological assessment of the site be carried out. This was to entail testing in the form of trial-trenches in the areas where the land had been disturbed.
The stratigraphy revealed in trenches indicated no evidence of features/deposits of archaeological significance surviving. The layers present consisted of rubble from the demolition of the slurry pits and topsoil. All trenches were excavated to natural.
