Monitoring of topsoil-stripping during the construction of a dwelling-house and associated services at Ballynascragh, Craughwell, Co. Galway, was carried out during May 2000. A field system had been recorded to the north-east of the development site. The site had been tested in early 1999 (Chapple 1999), with negative results.
The areas to be topsoil-stripped comprised the front driveway area, including a road lay-by, the dwelling-house area (an area of raised ground under the main dwelling-house area was also partially lowered/levelled by up to 0.4–0.5m), and the rear septic tank and percolation areas. Monitoring of all groundworks failed to reveal any finds, deposits or features of archaeological significance.
