Pre-development testing was undertaken in advance of the construction of a dwelling-house at Aucloggeen, Annaghdown, Co. Galway, in compliance with a condition of planning and recommendations from Dúchas The Heritage Service. It was concerned with an application to construct a new dwelling-house and septic tank/percolation area adjacent to a children’s burial-ground. While the development does not infringe on the children’s burial-ground, its proximity to the site necessitated pre-development testing.
The children’s burial-ground lies at the south-west end of a narrow pasture on relatively flat land. Aligned north-west/south-east, the heavily overgrown area of burial measures 15.9m x 9.6m. The headstones are plain, unworked uprights c. 0.4m x 0.25m and 0.15m wide. Their position suggests that the burials were oriented east–west.
A single trench was mechanically excavated in the course of pre-development testing. Oriented north-east/south-west, it measured 17m x 1m and was located along the line of the septic tank and percolation area. Excavated to a depth of 0.8m, the stratigraphy uncovered indicated no evidence of archaeological features. In addition to the pre-development testing, the excavation of foundation trenches was monitored but revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
