The proposed development, which involved the construction of a new dwelling-house, was located within an area of archaeological constraint around Kilconnell Friary. It was recommended that pre-development testing and subsequent monitoring be carried out at the site.

The SMR site consists of Kilconnell Friary, a field system, three holy wells and a horizontal mill. The proposed development is located along the line of a townland boundary. Three trenches were mechanically excavated during the pre-development testing. One of these was in the area of a naturally formed ridge, which acted as a field boundary. The sod and topsoil came down onto a stony gravel layer. The other two trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development, and the stratigraphy encountered consisted of sod and topsoil coming down onto the natural. No features/deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered.

Archaeological monitoring of the clearance of topsoil from the sites was also carried out. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered during the course of monitoring.
