Surface survey and geophysical prospection were carried out at the site as part of the Castell Henllys Field School. The work was conducted by the University of York, with GSB Prospection involved in the magnetometry. A generalised contour map of the eastern end of the island was made, and a resistivity survey was carried out over 11,200m2, mainly between St Mary’s Abbey and the Lower Church. The magnetometer survey was more extensive, over 27,200m2, though parts of many survey grids could not be surveyed with this method because of iron fences. The most significant discovery was a ditch not visible on the surface, which defines the ritual core of the monastery and passes near to the round towers. A strong anomaly suggesting a kiln lay just to the west of this ditch. Further survey work is planned.
