A test excavation was carried out to assist in assessing the archaeological impact of a housing development adjacent to the Capuchin friary, Belmont Park, Raheny, Dublin 5. The possible site of an 18th-century windmill is located on the hill on which both the development and the friary are situated. Although eight test-trenches were opened across the site, no evidence was uncovered to indicate the presence of the windmill.
However, as it was possible that archaeological remains associated with the windmill may have survived at the site, monitoring of all topsoil removal and related subsurface works across the site was undertaken. No archaeological material was identified. It is probable that the windmill was located elsewhere on the hill.
