Fingal County Council required an archaeological assessment of this site, at Parslickstown, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin, in an area zoned for industrial use, prior to disposal of the site for development. The development site corresponds to an SMR site listed as ‘enclosure (site of)’, identified through aerial photography as a circular cropmark. It has never appeared on any of the OS map editions.
The site to be assessed comprises 1.5 acres of land. The area was supposed to correspond to a greenfield site. A site inspection was made before the commencement of trenching. The site had been occupied and subsequently vacated, after which it was embanked to prevent further intrusion. The embankment, almost 2m high with sloping faces, is almost 4m thick at its base. The embankment was breached, and the breach has since been reconstituted and made good. The breach was made to allow access to the interior, which was used as a dump for structural debris and soil. The accumulated debris covers the total extent of the site to a depth of 1.25–1.8m.
This material effectively seals any archaeological remains under almost 2m of redeposited soil and rubble. Testing on the site at this time is not necessary as the potential remains are quite secure. The archaeology on this site is under no immediate threat and remains secure in situ.
