Archaeological testing was carried out at St Michael’s secondary school, Holy Faith Convent, Wellmount Road, Finglas, Dublin 11, from 11 to 13 September 2000. The testing programme was undertaken to determine the impact that the proposed sports complex would have on any surviving archaeological remains given that the site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Finglas.
Test-trench 1 measured 48m north–south x 1.6m. Two lateral test-trenches, each measuring 15m east–west by 1.6m, were also excavated. Prior to excavation the site was covered in grass. The test-trenches were dug by a digger using a toothless bucket.
Two stone field drains were uncovered during the excavation of Test-trench 1. The exposed extent of the first drain measured c. 1.6m in length (east–west axis) and 0.5m in width. The exposed extent of the second drain measured c. 1.6m in length (east–west axis) and 0.2m in width. The remains of a stone wall were also uncovered. The exposed extent measured c. 1.6m in length (east–west axis) x 0.5m in width. It survived to a height of c. 0.5m. The wall consisted of two courses, and the stones were held together by mortar. No archaeological finds were uncovered.
It is recommended that all groundworks associated with the proposed development should be monitored by a licensed archaeologist.
