Test excavation within the standing building was undertaken on 7–9 June 2000, prior to submission of a planning application for redevelopment. The site lies within the complex of the medieval abbey of St Thomas the Martyr, and significant structural remains have been uncovered by excavation in sites closeby.
Three trenches were excavated by machine, under supervision. Medieval soils with a maximum depth of 1.2m, overlain by post-medieval soils with a depth of 0.8m, were uncovered in all three trenches. No structural features were uncovered. The soils may indicate the former location of a medieval watercourse.
