The site lies outside the medieval town of Dublin, to the south of Dublin Castle and on the banks of the ‘black pool’. The assessment was carried out in October 2000 in advance of redevelopment and located a consistent deposit of medieval garden soil, which ranged in depth from 0.2m to 1.2m. These deposits produced medieval pottery and inclusions of animal bone, their fragmented condition suggesting that the area was under cultivation up until the 18th century. The assessment also located a network of post-medieval walls, which can be related to domestic buildings and outhouses depicted in the cartographic sources from the mid-18th century onwards. These walls are generally well preserved and survive to between 0.2m and 2m in depth. At least one small redbrick culvert was also identified. The partial standing remains of an 18th-century domestic brick ‘back-house’, which lies to the rear of No. 55 South Great George’s Street, was also identified, and the plan of the building was exposed during the assessment. This included elements of timber wainscoting and several floor levels. Further assessment will take place along the street frontage, after the demolition of buildings along the street front.
